About the show

One of ENCIM's most celebrated performances.

Comissoned originally by the Arte Careyes Film & Art Festival in 2014, 3 episodes from ¡Qué viva México! is an original cue sheet by José Serralde later arranged and developed by Ensamble Cine Mudo (Álvarez and Zerquera) for the screening of Alexandrov's 1976 montage proposal of Einsenstein's unfinished work.

The Ensemble was proposed by Filmoteca UNAM to Festival's film curator Marina Stavenhagen, whose idea was to setup a show exposing the power of restored films and live music, in the most appealing format. She selected three episodes by the Russian master giving birth to this work.

The musical rendering is an imaginary meeting of the aeshtetics left by the Soviet and Mexican Revolutions, after Ensemble Cine Mudo understanding of the music of Silvestre Revueltas, Carlos Chávez, Dmitri Shostakovich and other authors. The Ensemble performs musical citations, written passages, traditional mexican music, educated speculation of a possible musical meetup between Revueltas and Dmitri Shostakovich amidst silent film music improvisation.
